How is VAT worked out?

Saudi Arabia charges VAT at a standard rate of 15% on most goods and services under the VAT Law and its Implementing Regulations, administered by the Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority (ZATCA). The calculator works both ways:

We calculate with full precision, round each figure to the nearest halala (halves away from zero), and work out the last figure by adding or subtracting, so the price before VAT plus the VAT equals the price including VAT exactly, as on an invoice.

Worked examples

Worked with the calculator at 15%, rounded to the halala

Special cases

Do not take 15% of a VAT-inclusive price

If your price already includes VAT, such as a shelf price or an invoice total, the VAT in it is not 15% of that price. Divide the price by 1.15 to get the price before VAT; the difference is the VAT. A price of SAR 100 including VAT holds SAR 13.04 of VAT, not SAR 15. Choose “Take VAT out” and the calculator does this for you.

Zero-rated and exempt goods and services

The standard rate does not apply to everything. Some supplies are zero-rated, such as exports outside the GCC, and some are exempt, such as residential rent and certain financial services under the Implementing Regulations. The calculator only uses the standard rate, so if what you are buying is exempt or zero-rated there is no VAT to add, and the tax invoice is what counts.

Invoices from before July 2020

The rate went up from 5% to 15% on 1 July 2020, so supplies made before that date carried 5% VAT. If you are checking an old invoice, or a contract that started before the change and ran past it, confirm the date of supply before you apply today’s rate, and ask ZATCA about supplies that span both periods.

A one-halala difference from your invoice

The calculator rounds the VAT to the nearest halala and then adds it to the price, so the two parts always add up to the total exactly. Some billing systems work out the VAT line by line and add the results, so on a long invoice the total VAT can differ by a halala or two. That is rounding, not a wrong rate.

Frequently asked questions

What is the VAT rate in Saudi Arabia?

The standard rate is 15%, in force since 1 July 2020. VAT started at 5% on 1 January 2018. ZATCA’s guidance published in 2026 still tells businesses to charge 15%. No cut had been announced when we last checked, and we will update the calculator if the rate changes.

How do I add VAT to a price?

Multiply the amount by 0.15 to get the VAT, then add it to the amount to get the price including VAT. For SAR 1,000 the VAT is SAR 150 and the total is SAR 1,150. You can also multiply by 1.15 in one go. Choose “Add VAT” in the calculator to see each step in a table under the result.

How do I find the VAT inside a VAT-inclusive price?

Divide the inclusive price by 1.15 to get the price before VAT, then subtract that from the inclusive price to get the VAT. A price of SAR 1,150 including VAT is SAR 1,000 before VAT plus SAR 150 of VAT. Taking 15% of the inclusive price gives too much VAT, so avoid that shortcut.

Do shop prices in Saudi Arabia include VAT?

Prices shown to shoppers are normally VAT-inclusive, and the invoice shows the VAT on a separate line. Quotations between businesses are often written before VAT. Read the quote carefully, then choose “Take VAT out” for an inclusive price and “Add VAT” for a price before VAT.

Is there VAT on residential rent?

Renting a home to live in is an exempt supply under the Implementing Regulations, so no VAT is added to it. Hotels, furnished apartments and commercial leases are taxed at the standard rate. Selling property has its own rules outside this calculator, so check with ZATCA or an adviser before any property deal.

Can I use the calculator for my VAT return?

No. The calculator helps you understand a price, an invoice or a quotation. It does not work out the input and output tax that registered businesses report in a return. If your business is registered, use ZATCA’s guides or an accountant. The calculator does not store what you enter; everything is worked out on your device.
